It was a scorching hot day on Staten Island so what is the obvious thing to do?!
Club Brew Day!
Thanks to everyone who came out! We had a great showing for such a hot day. The pictures that were taken are up on the picture section.
Much beer and many bagels were consumed and the end product (10 gallons of cream ale) is actively fermenting. The final recipe ended up being as follows:
14 lbs Pale Malt
4 lbs flaked corn
7 oz Honey Malt
Mashed in at 154 degrees F for 60 minutes
71.22 grams of Liberty (60 Minutes)
23.74 grams of Liberty (5 Minutes)
We split the batch between two fermentation vessels and added 2 packages of WLP810 San Francisco Lager Yeast to one and 2 packages of WLP001 California Ale Yeast to the other. Both are fermenting at 64 degrees. This beer will be served at the Summer Nights: 99 Bottles of Beer on SI - Home Brewing for Beginners event at the Staten Island Museum on August 15th, 2019. Tickets are still available so if you are interested in learning how to make beer at home, learn a bit about the rich history of beer brewing on Staten Island, and drink some great beer you should check it out.
You can follow how the beer is fermenting via Tilt at the following spreadsheet:
